The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association presented their annual High School Coaching Awards today at its annual general meeting, which is being held in Brandon.
The MHSAA is based on the tremendous support of volunteers, teachers, coaches, corporate sector, media, and various other stakeholders interested in the promotion of school sport. The MHSAA annually recognizes the contribution of such individuals and presents recognition.
The Frank L. McKinnon Award is presented to an outstanding contributor to high school athletics. The award is named in honour of the long-time Principal of Carman Collegiate, Frank McKinnon, who was a past board member and President of the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association.
Scott Gurney of Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School was presented the Frank L. McKinnon Award.Â
Scott Gurney’s impact on high school athletics extends far beyond coaching and competition. Over a 36-year career with the Lord Selkirk School Division, Scott has exemplified the qualities of leadership, service, mentorship, and commitment that define the Frank L. McKinnon Award.
For the past 14 years, Scott has served as Athletic Director and Physical Education Department Head at Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive Secondary School, while also leading the school’s Cross Country and Track and Field programs for 29 years. Throughout his career, he has been a tireless advocate for student participation, healthy living, and the positive values that school sports bring to young people.
Scott’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping the culture of the Lord Selkirk Royals athletic program. Through periods of growth, change, and challenge—including the unprecedented disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic—he consistently demonstrated creativity, resilience, and a commitment to ensuring students remained connected to sport, physical activity, and one another. His vision and leadership helped establish a strong foundation that continues to benefit student-athletes, coaches, and the broader school community.
A leader by example, Scott has devoted countless hours to supporting not only his own programs but every athletic team in the school. He has served as a mentor to colleagues, a resource for coaches, and a trusted guide for athletes and families. Whether organizing programs, attending games, meeting with students and parents, or simply offering encouragement from the sidelines, Scott has always put the needs of students first.
What truly distinguishes Scott is the way he has built relationships and fostered a sense of community. His enthusiasm, professionalism, and unwavering support have inspired generations of students and staff. He has created an environment where participation is valued, excellence is encouraged, and everyone feels supported in their pursuit of success.
As Scott prepares to retire after more than three decades of service, his legacy is evident in the strength of the Lord Selkirk athletic program and in the countless lives he has positively influenced. His dedication, leadership, and commitment to education and school sport make him an exceptionally deserving recipient of the Frank L. McKinnon Award.
Each year the MHSAA selects the Female and Male High School Coaches of the Year. A $1,000 award is presented to each individual courtesy of the 1990 Grey Cup Legacy Fund.
