Groundhog Day 2026 was an extra-special World Wetlands Day at Ducks Unlimited Canada’s national HQ at Oak Hammock Marsh Wetland Discovery Centre.Â
The morning started off with the all-important seasonal forecast from famed local resident groundhog Manitoba Merv, while the evening featuring the Canadian premiere of Mission to Marsh, a travel-based documentary about the urgent need for wetland conservation and restoration.Â
In addition to their recreational uses, wetlands not only in Canada, but around the world buffer floods, improve water quality, mitigate drought, store carbon, and support biodiversity — practical benefits that matter to communities, farmers, Indigenous peoples, and Manitobans. Â
These benefits come through clearly in Mission to Marsh, which documents filmmakers Anni and Alex as they set out on an epic expedition from Atlantic Canada to Patagonia, with stops in Oromocto, NB., La Grande plée Bleue, QC, and Oak Hammock Marsh here in Manitoba.
