Winnipeg, MB – Skaters, Scots, and winter enthusiasts alike are invited to lace up and celebrate Scottish pride on ice as the Great Canadian Kilt Skate returns to Assiniboine Park’s Riley Family Duck Pond on Monday, February 16 (Louis Riel Day).
The St. Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg, proud hosts and past national champions (2021), is rallying the city to help reclaim the Canadian Kilt Skate Championship for 2026.
“Rain or shine, snowfall, blizzard or whiteout — Winnipeggers always find a way to have fun outdoors,” said Dwight MacAulay, President of the St. Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg. “You don’t need to wear a kilt, tartan, or even plaid. Whether you skate for ten minutes or two hours, it’s all about community spirit and winter joy.”
Participants are encouraged to bring family and friends — with or without skates — and enjoy a day of Scottish music, laughter, and camaraderie. Spectators can cheer on skaters in kilts, snap colourful photos for social media, and celebrate both Louis Riel Day and Scotland’s living heritage in true Winnipeg style.
Now in its 12th year, the Great Canadian Kilt Skate began in 2015 and has grown into a cross- country winter celebration held in cities including Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Saskatoon, Calgary, Lethbridge, and Winnipeg.
This year’s forecast promises perfect skating weather, so grab your skates—or your best winter boots—and join in Canada’s most spirited winter tradition.
